Heartbreak for the fans and followers of Rafael Nadal as well as Roger Federer. Yes, in a surprising as well as shocking match, Juan Martin Del Potro defeats the ace tennis player and several times champion Roger Federer in the quarter final match of the US Open. The result of the match that went in favour of tennis player Juan Martin Del Potro now prevents Roger Federer from playing against Rafael Nadal in the semi final match of the tournament which would have, in reality, been the first match that the two tennis legends would have been playing against each other at the Flushing Meadows.
In 7-5, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 loss against the 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer was unable to live up to his standards. If Federer would have won, then he would have went on to play the semi final match against Rafael Nadal and that certainly would have been a match straight out of the story book and it requires no telling that the whole world was looking forward to the match.
Rafael Nadal, on the other hand scripted an easy win in his quarter final match to sail into the semi finals. However, he would be playing against Juan Martin Del Potro and not Roger Federer.
However, it must be noted that Roger Federer had actually tried to back out of the US Open tournament and was not certainly at the best of his forms. Although he entered the quarter finals, he required as many as five sets to win his first two matches which is very unlikely of someone of the stature of Roger Federer.
When Rafael Nadal was asked if he wished to meet Roger Federer in the only Grand Slam event that they have never met, he had frankly replied that he would rather play against someone easier. And well, perhaps God had heard his prayers.
